Charity of the YearShare
Our 2017 Charity of the Year is The Whitechapel Centre.
Merseyrail staff have chosen to support homeless charity, The Whitechapel Centre, for 2017. The Liverpool-based charity works with people who are sleeping rough, living in hostels or struggling to manage their accommodation.
The partnership, which was voted for by Merseyrail staff, began on 1st March with a £10,000 donation from Merseyrail. Throughout the year the charity will hold bucket collections at Merseyrail stations at major sporting occasions such as the Grand National and the Open Golf Championship at Royal Birkdale. Merseyrail staff are also encouraged to take part in sponsored events, including the Whitechapel Sleepout, as well as organising their own challenges.
Ruth McCaughley, Fundraising Manager at The Whitechapel Centre said:
“We are absolutely delighted that Merseyrail staff have voted to support us this year. We already have strong links as we work together to support people who are sleeping rough at Merseyrail stations. Staff are already planning their fundraising activities for the year and we’ll be supporting them throughout. We’re also able to offer volunteering opportunities for those who can spare some time.”
“The partnership has the potential to raise a significant amount of money which will have a big impact on our work and the people we support. Sadly we are helping an increasing number of people who are struggling and Merseyrail’s support couldn’t come at a better time.”
Jan Chaudhry-van der Velde, Managing Director of Merseyrail said:
'We know that like everywhere else in the country, homelessness in the city region is getting worse, and we're keen to contribute to the community's efforts to tackle it. As part of our commitment to Whitechapel, we will help raise funds and just as importantly, heighten the profile of this worthy charity, which has worked tirelessly to get people off the streets and on the road to better lives.'
