The International Mersey River Festival returns for another action packed weekend on the 24th & 25th June. This year Armed Forces Day will be along for the ride adding naval vessels and fly pasts to the waterfront.
The waterfront will play host to a variety of activities throughout the weekend including marching bands, boat races, polo tournaments, Jet Ski stunt displays and historical ships bringing the river in the heart of our city to life.
Armed Forces Day will see roughly 1,000 serving personnel, veterans, cadets and marching bands parade through the city. The march begins at 11am as they step off from St George’s Hall. The parade will travel through the city centre and on onwards to Princes Parade, where a salute will be given by numerous special guests and dignitaries, including the Earl of Wessex.
The Red Arrows and other aircrafts will be involved in numerous fly pasts throughout the day and along the waterfront, there will be activities and displays dedicated to all three military services until 5pm. These will include the showing of a bomb disposal robot, a survival equipment display, tanks and armoured vehicles, an RAF technology zone, and static aircraft.
The International River Festival will see countless Tall Ships sail in to the city for the maritime extravaganza, they will be accompanied by of military vessels and research ships.
The programme for the event is still being finalised - but what is certain is that The British ThunderCat Racing Tour will return and boats will battle it out on the Mersey, reaching speeds of up to 65mph.
Crowds can view the canoe, polo and wakeboarding displays, incredible jet skiing and fly boarding. There will also be dry land exhibitions, unarmed combat and weapons displays. While the Sea Cadets will perform their field gun window ladder semaphore and club swinging activities.
There will also be an exciting music soundtrack to the weekend which will take place on stages around the waterfront.
Getting to the festival by train
James Street is a a few minutes from the waterfront for people travelling on the Wirral Line. Both Liverpool Centra and Moorfields are just a short walk away for people using the Northern Line.
