Service Disruption: Strike Action Tomorrow

Due to strike action Merseyrail will be running a reduced service tomorrow.

Trains will run every half hour from around 07:00 - 19:00, however it is possible that timetables will change during strike action.

Walrus Smartcard


Walrus Smartcard Ticketing coming soon to Southport and Kirkby stations.

Walrus is Merseytravel’s smart ticketing card for public transport. From Tuesday 3rd May we will be trialling the Walrus Smart Card at Southport station and from Monday 9th May at Kirkby station. From these days, the following tickets will only be available on a smart card:

  • Saveaways (same day and next day tickets only)
  • Solo weekly and 4 weekly for adults (bus ticket)
  • Solo weekly for 18 and under (bus ticket)

Saveaway tickets are valid for travel on rail, bus and ferry before 6.30am and after 9.30am weekdays or anytime on weekends and bank holidays.

Please allow extra time when purchasing tickets at Southport and Kirkby as we trial this system. All other tickets will be sold as normal.

There is no extra charge for tickets on a Walrus Smartcard. At station ticket gates, like Southport, simply hold your Walrus card against the card reader on the gate. At stations without ticket gates and on trains, staff will be able to quickly check what ticket you have on your Walrus card.
